Who do we have here?

Post  Admin on Wed Apr 09, 2008 7:08 am

Hi everyone,

Just wondering. Where is everyone from? Does anyone work in math?

Thanks,
Chris

I live in New York City - I used to do Systems Engineering for a think tank in DC, then worked for Northrop Grumman. Now I do financial stuff and project management for a small software company - much happier doing that. Unfortunately engineering jobs are rare in New York City. So in terms of math, I don't work with it anymore.

I do software development & project management. The toughest math I do is trying to estimate runtimes and tablespace volumes with more unknowns than equations or facts.

Many years ago I did revenue forecasting which introduced me to time series analysis.

I live in Utah. I originally come from New Jersey and spent 15 years in Florida before moving here in the fall of 2006. I don't work "in math", but I use it every day framing large houses (mansions?) on the mountains. Mostly geometry and trig, and I find that makes going to work each day a little bit more tolerable than it might be otherwise. Winding staircases, elliptical domes and arches, large truly conical roofs, not to mention the typical roof rafters (commons, hips, valleys, etc.) and floor plan layouts are just a few of the things I use math for on a daily basis. I try to teach those who work for me everything that I can, but with mixed results. Most want some sort of magical shortcut to get the answer to a sometimes very complicated (usually 3-dimensional) problem, and become disillusioned when they find out just how much math can be involved. But as for me, I live for it!

Very close to what I do. I work in Insurance as an actuarial analyst. I forecast ultimate losses for reserving, and on the side, work as a freelance programmer. I love math and programming.

My name is Cory and I have been working at an Engineering firm in Aurora, CO in the Survey Department for the past year. I hope to become a PLS (unfortunately, that is still 5 years away). What I enjoy most about Surveying is the mathematics. I am always interested in historical and new approaches to the geometrical, trigonometrical, and algebraic problems I encounter. I would love to discuss these topics on this forum.

Before this current position, I worked for 12 years in Inventory Control for various manufacturing companies: those companies manufactured Mass Flow Sensors, Spectrometers, and Medical Imaging Equipment, respectively.

Welcome. Glad to have you. We are just getting started, and conversations are just starting to pick up, so feel free to jump into the forums and tell us a little more about your interests. I haven't done much with this kind of math since trig, but sounds like fun.

Thanks,
Chris

I too work in the civil engineering field, and am involved in surveying. I spent some time in the field, but now I do all of our construction stakeout calculations, subdivision calculations, and outbound surveys. It is a refreshing break from the engineering design I am responsible for as well. I will most likely return to school to get my bachelor's in land surveying, which is required for licensure in New Jersey. The survey math is pretty interesting, and I am particularly intrigued by traverse balancing methods. The historical aspect of land surveying is what drove me to get involved.
