Undergraduate Math

Undergraduate Math
I have been asked by my alma matter, WVUIT, to sit on their advisor board this fall. This board will help to redesign their curriculum for the next few years. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I have a few ideas of how to improve current undergraduate curriculums, but I would like to get some suggestions, and see what other people think of my ideas, before I meet with them.

I will probably have an opinion on your ideas, but without knowing the school's specific issues, I don't really know what kind of suggestions to give.

Re: Undergraduate Math

Here are the requirements for a Math BS at West Virginia University Institute of Technology in Montgomery, WV. This is the curriculum they will be revising.
My first thought is that they require computer science, which means C++, and I think Visual Basic is much more usable for Mathematicians.
Any thought on this or any other part of the curriculum?

Re: Undergraduate Math
Well my first thought is that there seem to be an awfully high number of humanities requirements for the non-business BS - I am all for people being well-rounded, but wouldn't math majors benefit more from being able to dive into more math classes than humanities?
I can't really comment on C++ vs. VB as I wasn't a math major - I was an engineer and had to study Fortran
I would suggest looking at the curriculum for some of the top math BS programs in the country - see what programming classes they require.
This might be a dumb question, but why is Introduction to Philosophy required?

Re: Undergraduate Math
Thanks for the tips. I had not really thought much about how many liberal arts classes they require. As for the philosophy, it has been on the books as long as I have been around, and I love'd the class, but have no idea why it is required. My only thought is sort of as a math history class, since they don't have one specifically, and all the oldest philosophers were mathematicians. Great tip about looking at other math programs. I always miss the obvious, and that hadn't occured to me.
